I wouldn\u2019t have been able to persist, to complete, without my first-semester RA.  I mentioned him in the dedication of my dissertation; he was that great an influence on my future. I was a trouble-maker, first-generation, every \u201cism\u201d-you-can-imagine holder.  I paid my first semester tuition by running books for a local bookie. Everyone I knew \nbet on sporting contests.  When I decided to begin attending university \nafter a horrendous accident left me disabled, one of the first people \nthat offered to \u201chelp\u201d, was, you guessed it, my bookie. Seems he had \nseveral \u201cunpaid\u201d debts on the campus, and my presence afforded him an \nopportunity to collect. He fronted me money and offered me a percentage \nof what I collected that was already owed to him.  It worked out that it\n would be possible to \u201cpay back\u201d the fronted amount, and still make \nmoney within my first semester.  Once I realized how much money I could \nmake, well, it was fascinating (to me) how many students gambled on any \nsporting contest.  If Kathy hadn\u2019t \u201ccaught\u201d me, who knows how much money\n I\u2019d have made.  I would also have flunked out. He exposed me to differences in race, sexuality,\n religion, abilities, you name it; he had me observing. And reflecting. \nAnd talking.  That\u2019s right, he made me tell him how I <em>felt<\/em> \nabout all that \u201cstuff!\u201d  For a while, I would look back on those months \ntogether and I often wondered why he bothered.  What did he see that \nkept him from just \u201cturning me in\u201d to the RHD?  Know what?  He just \ncared.  I probably wasn\u2019t that unique.  After I later became an RA, I \nlaughed many times at how selfish I was, thinking that I was somehow \n\u201chis special project.\u201d  As a paraprofessional I met many students that \nwere just as ignorant as I was, and yes, even some that were (almost!) \nbehaviorally worse.  Then, and later as a professional, I tried to \n\u201csave\u2019em all.\u201d  It doesn\u2019t always work that way, but still we try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter, paying-it-forward just feels right.  Student Affairs, as a profession, offers more chances to make <em>positive<\/em> differences in lives than anything else I\u2019ve ever done.<br>\n<strong><br>\nI\u2019ve \u201cjumped out\u201d of Student Affairs twice;<\/strong> once when recruited\n by a Japanese company.  After six corporate years I returned to the \nprofession.  The second time was, again, for an international \nopportunity; I began consulting while doing research for my dissertation\n (ironically for a student affairs degree) in China. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I returned from China, I wasn\u2019t able to \u201cjump right back in\u201d the\n profession.  We (as a profession) really do have a \u201cwhat have you done \nfor me lately\u201d attitude, and that\u2019s perfectly fine.  It\u2019ll take time to \nrebuild a professional reputation; I\u2019m down with that.   Student affairs\n professionals, much like leaders, are probably not born; they are \ncreated through intense development processes that truly resonate deep \nwithin the spirits. The old saying, \u201cyou can take the boy out of the \ncountry, but not the country out of the boy\u201d has never been truer of \nanyone than me.  Well, I believe the same can be said about Student \nAffairs.
