Both her parents and her older brother are\n also engineers\u2013so I get to rub elbows with a house-full of really smart\n people occasionally. My partner and I generally share our feelings and \nideas about pretty much everything. A few days ago I was thinking about \nmy personal leadership model, and how to \u201cbuild\u201d it into a structure. \nI\u2019ve developed that model over several years, and decided that the \n\u201cstructure\u201d wasn\u2019t linked to the ideas in my model like I wanted it to \nbe. I asked her, point-blank, what\u2019s the strongest structure, in terms \nof physical strength, is it a pyramid? She gave me that \u201cyou are so \nsweet and cute when you think outside your professional realm of \nknowlege\u201d smile, then sketched out a structure, and told me, \u201chere, this\n is a Tetrahedron.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160328220645\/http%3A\/\/i2.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tetrahedron-in-cube-51.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Tetrahedron-in-cube-51-2.png?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-634\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160328220645\/http%3A\/\/i0.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/idea_thinking.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/idea_thinking.jpg?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-538\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\n was perfect. Why? Because I could do exactly what I wanted to do! I can\n represent both dimensions of leadership: internal and external. To top \nit off, borrowing terms from one of my favorite leaders on social media,\n <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160328220645\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/LollyDaskal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lolly Daskal<\/a>,\n it can allow a \u201cheart-based\u201d visual representation of \u201cleading from \nwithin.\u201d I think a Tetrahedron is shaped similarly to the human heart, \nso yeah, the visual works for me.<br>\nThen\n I slept on the idea for a night. Well, I tried to sleep. I kept \nsketching it out in my head and trying to fit the key concepts of \nleadership into the structure (in my dreams\u2013yeah, I do that too). \nFinally, I had to get up and write\/draw. I had it figured out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I decided to write a series of blog posts and define each of the \nconcepts which \u201cbuild\u201d my internal leadership model, and then my \nexternal organizational leadership model. I need something to get me \nback into writing, and I thought committing to a multi-part blog would \nprobably do that. Like all ideas, nearly all of my ideas, I find that \neven when I think it is original, it isn\u2019t entirely. Just before I \nplanned to write the first post, I searched for domains that had \ntetrahedrons and leadership in combination\u2013most were available. I \nsearched for \u201cTetrahedral Leadership\u201d and guess what. Somebody thought \nof this nearly 10 years ago. So, here, I give that person credit, though\n I\u2019m quite sure I never ran across that before. Mr <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160328220645\/http:\/\/ldrflr.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/vision-of-leadership-tetrahedral-model.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris Newham<\/a>, I think you had\/have a great idea, and I\u2019m gonna\u2019 run with it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160328220645\/http%3A\/\/i2.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tetrahedral_prism.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nixhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Tetrahedral_prism-2.png?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-665\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For my model, I chose the Tetrahedral-Prism, because it allows me to \ndetail the \u201cheart-based\u201d leadership that I believe is so crucial for my \neffectiveness, and visually represent how \u201cleading from within\u201d gives \nstrength and structure to the tenants of organizational leadership that \nI\u2019ve found to be the most critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting tomorrow, I\u2019ll write the first post of my model. I\u2019ll begin outward and work inward. I\u2019ll begin with the concept that I find to be most critical to organizational health and development. And what is that concept? His core for the PhD was student affairs, and the cognate was sociology. He completed his dissertation research while living and working in China for six years. His research interests are online learning support; transnational education; two-year community and technical college leadership--particularly with respect to student retention, and organizational change &amp; turnaround; and role playing games\u2019 (RPGs) effect on leadership skills development. He has worked in administrative roles (VP over both Academic and Student Affairs and interim president\/CEO of a community college) most of his career and has extensive management and leadership experience in East Asia, specifically in global advanced manufacturing.
