She linked the video of Brad Paisley \nand LL Cool J that has stirred somewhat of a controversy.  I must \nconfess, since I do not watch television nor follow mainstream news, I \nhadn\u2019t seen the video or heard the song until this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">Her comment was: <em>Okay so this song is causing a lot of \ncontroversy right now\u2026I want your thoughts on it\u2026the only requirement to\n post is that you listen to the song in its entirety before commenting. \nGO..<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">After posting there, I felt it was blog-worthy.  Go figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>I\u2019m not sorry for this statement.<\/strong>  If one hasn\u2019t \ngrown up in the South, one has no right to claim knowledge here \nregarding the sentiments surrounding the battle flag of the Confederacy.\n  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>I DID grow up in the South.<\/strong>  I DID serve on the student senate that finally saw fit to remove the Confederate States of  America\u2019s battle flag as an official symbol of the University of  Mississippi.  I grew up loving that flag and the Southern culture it  stood for. Why did I change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">Myriad reasons, but the most powerful one instance was when my \nsupervisor, an African American woman, saw me wearing a polo shirt with \n\u201cColonel Reb\u201d logo emblazoned.  Her reaction was one that anyone with \neven a microscopic compassionate nerve could not overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>She had hired me<\/strong>; I started my career in Student Affairs by becoming an RA for her, in an international residence hall.   She knew that I was already going through identity development shift.   She knew that she was my first Black supervisor.  We talked about my commitment for social justice and diversity often, in our 1:1 meetings.   She had already appointed me to serve on the \u201cminority outreach  conference\u201d to recruit Black students to Ole Miss.  I was and still am passionate about affirmative action and social justice for all identity  groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">However, I had on, that red polo shirt, with Colonel Reb blazin\u2019. She\n looked at me, and with an \u201cEt tu, Brute\u201d tone in her voice, asked, \n\u201ceven you, vince?\u201d  The tone would have been sufficient.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">That wasn\u2019t what hit me the hardest, her tone.  <strong>What struck me were her eyes.<\/strong>  I still nearly feel the pain that I saw in her eyes that day.  I never again wore any \u201cOld South\u201d memorabilia.  I will not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>I am proud of being from the South.<\/strong>  I am a Southerner,  through and through.  The battle flag with St. Andrew\u2019s cross has been  misused and abused, much as has the original svastika, meaning \u201cto be  good.\u201d  I have personal feelings and beliefs about that flag, the old  South, and the new South.  My personal feelings and beliefs may not  always be in line with mainstream history or media.  That isn\u2019t the  point, not to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>In my eyes, wearing the \u201cStars &amp; Bars\u201d is no different than wearing a svastika. <\/strong> I must know, others will be hurt and offended.  I rather choose not to hurt and offend fellow members of my human race.<br>\n<strong><br>\nBeing hurtful is no accident.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A trusted colleague and friend recently posted a comment on her Facebook profile. His core for the PhD was student affairs, and the cognate was sociology. He completed his dissertation research while living and working in China for six years. His research interests are online learning support; transnational education; two-year community and technical college leadership--particularly with respect to student retention, and organizational change &amp; turnaround; and role playing games\u2019 (RPGs) effect on leadership skills development. He has worked in administrative roles (VP over both Academic and Student Affairs and interim president\/CEO of a community college) most of his career and has extensive management and leadership experience in East Asia, specifically in global advanced manufacturing.
